Communications Associate


The Coastal Conservation League seeks a full-time Communications Associate for its Charleston, South Carolina office.

The Conservation League is a nonprofit organization that works with communities, elected officials, businesses and citizen groups to protect the natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean air and water and quality of life along the South Carolina coast.

Under the leadership of the Communications Director, the Communications Associate will work closely with the organization’s development and program teams and assist with digital communications, print materials, press outreach and social media. Applicants should have experience in communications or digital advocacy in the nonprofit, government, media or related sectors.

The ideal candidate must be a team player who enjoys working in a fast-paced, social, dynamic work environment and managing diverse projects with tight deadlines. He/she must demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, strong writing and editing skills, excellent oral communication skills, and constant attention to detail. The ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt to new challenges is critical for success.

The ideal candidate is also resourceful, flexible, energetic and persistent. A commitment to excellence and growth, as well as conservation and advocacy, is important. Relationship building, setting goals, prioritizing and implementing projects, and meeting deadlines, are equally important.

Required Education and Experience

  • College degree in communications, journalism or a related field
  • 1-3 years of communications or public relations experience
  • Experience with social media and press outreach
  • Experience in creating and distributing graphics and video content
  • Experience translating technical and scientific issues for mass audiences

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Experience with BSD Tools, Raiser’s Edge and similar CRM tools
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Experience with software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere
