Read the September 1st, 2009 Island Packet Op-Ed about the proposed coal plant on the Pee Dee River by the Coastal Conservation League’s Board member George Johnston.

“Readers need a broader viewpoint on your Aug. 27 editorial that the “local threat” of a new “coal-fired” plant on the Pee Dee River has been avoided.  You said the U.S. Geological Survey reports, “South Carolina rivers already are poisoned with some of the highest levels of mercury in the nation … largely from coal-fired power plants” … so the Santee Cooper decision to shelve the plans was right.”
