What is the issue?

Johns Island roads are aging and improvements are needed. The debate over the type of improvements continues.

A new road, pushed quickly and with only select interests in mind, would be divisive for the long-standing island community. We believe law enforcement on local roads, localized safety improvements and intersection improvements could offer great benefits without bisecting the island or widening local roads. We believe these localized improvements carry a smaller price-tag and greater benefit for the entire Johns and Wadmalaw island communities and should be the #1 priority for this area.

How would it affect South Carolina?

Comprehensive transportation planning at the County level is imperative. By not giving into special interests, Charleston County can set an example and show that comprehensive planning, not a piece-meal approach, works best. Also, by re-investing and improving current infrastructure, Charleston County can “fix our roads first” and set an example for other counties across the state with similar problems.

What can you do about it?

Help Charleston County create a solution that works for everyone not just a new road only used by a few residents. This is an important community issue that has lingered for years and its important once again to listen to ideas and voice your thoughts.

  • A comprehensive transportation study/plan will bring the best ideas forward for Johns Island.
  • Safety and capacity of all roads will be improved.
  • Farmland, natural habitat, property and wetlands will be protected.
  • Any change will compliment the rural character of Johns Island and its residents.
  • Current roads will continue to go unnoticed at the expense of new road construction, leaving many residents forced to drive unsafe roads.
  • Money and time will be spent building a new road that does not fit the needs of the majority.
  • Politics and power will affect a transportation project for near-term goals, opening up a wide swath of properties to development in the future.
  • The proliferation of new highways on Johns Island will induce conventional suburban sprawl that will result in an incompatible sense of place on Johns Island.
