Become a Member Why? Because despite being 24th among the fifty states in population, South Carolina ranks 4th in per capita energy consumption; because mercury levels in the Pee Dee River have prompted state warnings to limit or avoid fish consumption; because during the last 20 years our population has increased 40 percent while our land use has increased 250 percent. And because it does not have to be this way. Together we can demand better choices from our leaders – choices that promote livable, sustainable communities, foster economic development based on smart growth policies, and increase quality of life while protecting our natural environment. Become a member and become part of a better way for coastal South Carolina. Renew your Membership As a member you’ve shared in our successes – the preservation of Sandy Island, protection of the ACE Basin, relocation of the State Ports Authority, among many. And you’ve seen the threats our communities and natural environment have faced: unregulated, unplanned growth that has served only narrow self interests while disrupting centuries-old communities such as Awendaw and McClellanville; ill-conceived projects such as the Pee Dee River coal generated power plant that would have wed our state to a dirty, archaic energy policy; and transportation choices such as the I-526 extension that would destroy the character of our rural areas without addressing our underlying community needs. You know the threats are real, but you’ve seen that together we make a difference. Renew your membership and renew the fight for a more livable, sustainable dynamic South Carolina.

  • "While we live in the upstate of South Carolina, our hearts are in the  beautiful lowcountry; and we are so grateful for the Coastal Conservation League and the work it is doing to preserve the precious coastal lands that we love."
