Planned Giving

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” ~John Muir

What will your gift to nature be?

This year the Coastal Conservation League celebrates 30 years of successful conservation initiatives. Through the work of our staff, members and partner organizations, more than one million acres of the coastal plain have been permanently protected, benefiting South Carolina residents and visitors alike. This achievement is just one of the many comprising the Conservation League’s rich history, and we plan to continue our diligence and dedication to build upon our legacy into the next quarter century and beyond. You, too, can leave a legacy for the future of the Lowcountry.

By naming the Conservation League in your estate plans as direct or contingent beneficiary of specific assets, a portion of your estate or your residual estate, you can support the long-term financial strength of the Conservation League.

Two of the simplest legacy gifts can be made as a bequest through your will or trust or through a beneficiary designation of your retirement plan, life insurance policy, bank account, brokerage account, or certificates of deposit.

We’ve partnered with FreeWill to provide the Conservation League’s supporters with a free resource to make writing your will and creating a charitable bequest easier than ever. This resource will help you to write a legally valid will and create a gift that will protect South Carolina’s landscapes, wildlife, and quality of life forever, at no personal cost today. Take 20 minutes to write your free will and protect the people and places you care about the most. Get started here.

Types of bequests:

  • Specific Bequest: You may designate a specific dollar amount or a particular asset (ex. artwork, collectibles, or real estate) to the Conservation League.
  • Residuary Bequest: You may designate that the Conservation League receive all or a portion of the remainder of your estate, retirement plan, or other assets.
  • Contingent Bequest: In the event that your primary beneficiary or beneficiaries do not survive you, it is prudent to provide a contingent designation.

The benefits of revocable planned gifts such as these are that you can make changes at any time, provide estate tax savings and charitable estate tax deductions, and create a legacy that reflects your values.

And please let us know! Contact Nancy Appel at 843-723-9895 or [email protected]. We’d love to welcome you to the Coastal Legacy Society!

Our Coastal Legacy Society is a generous and dedicated group of members who’ve enhanced their commitment to conservation and the League by making a planned gift. We appreciate your support, and to additionally make a long-term gift – a culmination of a lifetime’s work – shows dedication beyond measure.

Future support from members like you ensures that we can sustain our important conservation work for many years to come.

Charitable IRA Giving

If you’re 70.5 or older, there’s a smarter way to support the Coastal Conservation League — a gift directly from your IRA. These gifts are called Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) and are always tax-free, regardless of whether or not you itemize deductions on your return. Making a QCD is a powerful way to make an immediate impact on the protection and stewardship of South Carolina’s natural habitats and quality of life.
