The End of the I-526 Extension

by Emmi Palenbaum

The I-526 Mark Clark Extension project is officially no more!

The I-526 Mark Clark Extension project is officially no more. The S.C. Transportation Infrastructure Bank Board voted unanimously yesterday to end the three-way funding contract. This is one of the final pieces to affirm the end of this destructive road project. Read more from the Post & Courier.

After many years of community opposition, including voting down a sales tax that would have funded the project in November, we are thrilled to see this outcome today.

We commend Charleston County for heeding the will of their constituents who overwhelmingly voted “no” on this project.

Charleston County should now coordinate with SCDOT to formally withdraw the permits for the project, and SCDOT will hopefully act quickly to return the rights-of-way it had acquired to the community.

These lands are ripe with public access and conservation opportunities. Now we must look to the future and work together to identify transportation infrastructure projects that will benefit our communities without harming the local landscapes we hold so dear.
