Lady’s Island Traffic Study

The City of Beaufort, in cooperation with Beaufort County, is beginning a traffic study for Highway 21, from the Woods Memorial Bridge to Chowen Creek. This will be your first opportunity to hear details of the study and your feedback is important!

Transportation design is directly linked to future land use on Lady’s Island and any changes to the roadway must fit the community.  Should Highway 21 continue as a strip commercial corridor, with widened intersections and new lanes only suitable for cars or can it be something better?  We believe it can!  Throughout the study, we encourage the City and consultants to look at traffic patterns and analyze connecting streets, bicycle and pedestrian access, and parallel roadways. This can give all drivers and cyclists choices and prevent bottlenecking at a single intersection.  It can also encourage the development of village centers, connected neighborhoods and redevelopment rather than automobile-centric, environmentally heavy sprawl.  Come share your thoughts on how to make this solution a reality!
