A groundbreaking consumer protection bill is on the table, and South Carolina residents need to act fast to get it passed!
During the first week of session, bipartisan legislation (S 784) was introduced, which is designed to shield ratepayers from skyrocketing electric bills being driven by Big Tech’s desire to bring data centers into our state and state and local governmental efforts to lure them here with multi-million-dollar subsidies at our expense. After the House stripped similar protections from last year’s energy bill, we are excited to see the Senate continue the fight in 2026.
With growing concerns about data centers and South Carolina’s energy future, this bill must reach the finish line!
The Crisis: South Carolina already has the third-highest residential electric bills in the nation. They could soon get much higher as utilities are planning to spend billions on new fossil-fuel infrastructure, mostly to serve power-hungry data centers.
The Solution: S 784 would prevent utilities from passing data center energy costs onto families and small businesses, end special tax breaks for these massive facilities, require water usage transparency, set energy-efficiency targets, and require regulators to allow public input on major energy projects.
Action needed: Contact your senator and ask them to cosponsor S 784. If your senator is already a cosponsor, please thank them!
