What is it?

The Jasper Ocean Terminal (Jasper Port) is a proposed new port in Jasper County along the Savannah River.  The Jasper Ocean Terminal is proposed as a joint partnership between the Georgia and South Carolina Ports Authorities on a 1,500-acre site along the north bank of the Savannah River.  The port is forecasted to accommodate 7 million containers per year. It will require upland development and new infrastructure including vehicular and rail access.

Where are we in the process?

The process is just beginning.  The port must be evaluated through a permitting process, governed by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).  The Army Corps of Engineers is the lead Federal agency for this process.

The first meeting was held January 2017 and solicited feedback on the types of impacts that should be evaluated by permitting agencies.

From there, a draft Environmental Impact statement will be created, natural resource agencies will be consulted and it will be made available for public review.  The Draft EIS will become final over the course of 4-5 years.

You can read more about the Jasper Ocean Terminal on the Army Corps’ website: Public Notice
