Hold the line for St. Helena

On Monday, September 9, Beaufort County Council will discuss the proposed Pine Island golf resort during Executive Session. Don’t allow a backroom deal to circumvent the Cultural Protection Overlay (CPO) and green light a golf resort on St. Helena. It is urgent to show up on Monday to remind the County Council that the community has spoken: protect the CPO and don’t allow a golf resort that violates St. Helena’s community-led rules.

Beaufort County Council Meeting
Monday, September 9, 2024 at 5:00 PM
100 Ribaut Rd, Beaufort

The harmful and pervasive impacts of resort-style development on Gullah/Geechee culture and land have been thoroughly studied and documented. The St. Helena community made clear that this exclusionary pattern of development is not compatible with the rural character and cultural heritage of the island when the CPO was put in place 25 years ago. Last year, with an outpouring of widespread community support, the CPO zoning law was re-affirmed and council voted against removing Pine Island from the law’s prohibition on golf courses, gated communities, and resort development.

We must continue to encourage Beaufort County Council to remain steadfast in their decision to stand with the St. Helena community and defend the Cultural Protection Overlay.
