UPDATE 3/12/24
We have great news to share: the mine operating permit application for West Cox Ferry Road Sand Mine has been withdrawn. This is a win for the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge!Moss Park Partners II, LLC notified the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control that it is withdrawing its permit application, and there has been no indication that a new permit application will be submitted.
In light of this, the public hearing scheduled for later this week has been canceled. This mine would have been surrounded by the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge on three sides. Mining and associated activities may have impacted water quality, wildlife, recreation, and flood mitigation potential for surrounding communities and the refuge.
It was yet another example of a mine on the edge of conservation land—lands that are supposed to be protected in perpetuity and your comments and advocacy made a difference in protecting it.
Thank you for your dedication to protecting the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. This couldn’t have happened without you.
Help us protect Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge at next week’s public hearingThank you to everyone who submitted comments and spoke up about the proposed West Cox Ferry Mine in Conway adjacent to the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. We have good news to share—our request to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for a public hearing has been accepted and scheduled for next week! Over 120 of you sent comments and your advocacy did not go ignored.
This hearing process is an opportunity to provide DHEC with concerns and additional comments regarding the application being considered. During this hearing, the public can learn about the application, ask questions, and voice opinion. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can submit comments to DHEC here until March 29th. |
West Cox Ferry Mine Public Hearing with DHEC Thursday, March 14th at 6:00 PM Horry-Georgetown Technical College Burroughs and Chapin Auditorium 2050 US 501 East, Conway, SC 29526 |
|
In this case, the hearing process gives us the opportunity to speak up with concerns about how this application would impact the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. Please join us on March 14th for the public meeting, followed by the formal hearing. You can meet DHEC staff when doors open at 5:30 p.m. prior to the meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m. and the hearing at 7:00 p.m.
We need the community present to voice concerns with this proposed mine given it is bordered by the refuge on three sides! If you love and enjoy spending time on the refuge then we need to see you there! |
