Jasper County: Take Part in Community Planning

by Lily Abromeit

Jasper County boasts award-winning tree farms, expansive wild game lands, and pristine waterfront vista views. Many longtime residents have sustained themselves on their family land for generations by farming, fishing, and hunting. In Jasper County, scenes like landowners driving their tractors on the highway, crabbers checking their pots, or bird dogs roaming through stands of longleaf pines, are still common sights today. For many, it is imperative that we do not take these traditions for granted.

That is why the Conservation League strongly encourages you to participate in Jasper County’s Master Plan Workshop on Monday, October 30, 2023. Now is a critical time to speak up for Jasper County’s rural communities and natural resources! Your voice matters and you can have a say in Jasper County’s future.

Residents can and should be proud of their home and its unique coastal heritage: from the sand ridges in Tilman to the oxbow lakes along the Savannah River, to the meandering tidal creeks along the Broad River. There is no denying Jasper County is a truly special place. Unfortunately, rapid and unsustainable growth, sometimes called sprawl, threatens to forever change the rural character of the county.

We have seen how sprawl has impacted other communities across our corner of the Lowcountry, often to the detriment of historic settlement neighborhoods and the environment which attracts so many folks to the Lowcountry in the first place. By participating in Jasper County’s Master Plan updates, we have a unique opportunity to avoid past mistakes and ensure that Jasper County residents can continue to enjoy clean air and water, recreate in nature, and pass on outdoor traditions to the next generation.
