Out & About: Get involved with oyster reef restoration up and down the coast

by Emmi Palenbaum

South Carolina is home to an abundance of salt marsh ecosystems. It’s no secret these special waterways provide breathtaking views and much more, but if you look closer you’ll find thousands of ecosystem engineers at work: oysters. With their ability to filter water and protect the shoreline, oysters are vital to our way of life on the coast.

Support for this work is funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s National Coastal Resilience grant in which we were awarded with SCDNR and partners $1.2 million for oyster restoration in the Beaufort region. Read more about that award here.

We’re teaming up with partners up and down the coast to help restore oyster populations and reef structures. Check out all the opportunities this summer to get your hands dirty!
