Next Tuesday, October 29th, the Ravenel Town Council will hold a second reading and final vote on a rezoning request and development agreement that would densely place over 80 homes and septic tanks outside the Urban Growth Boundary, on the edges of preserved lands, and bordering critical salt marsh and tributaries that feed the Stono River. |
Tell Ravenel Town Council to oppose rezoning the Lucas Tract by signing the petition and submitting comments below. |
Last month, we spoke out at Town Council, warning them of the real dangers that ill-placed, dense, septic tanks pose on our water quality, wildlife, and way of life. Town Council narrowly passed both requests in a 5-4 vote. Now, we need your help to tell Council to reject these plans before it’s too late. Town Council will take their final votes next week: |

These plans would rezone two parcels totaling 112 acres from Agricultural Residential to a Planned Unit Development. If approved, over 80 units would be squeezed on 44 acres–some on lots as small as a quarter of an acre and within the 100-year floodplain – all relying on individual septic tanks. The roughly 68 remaining acres consist of wetlands, salt marsh, tributaries, and tidelands. This area is also surrounded by protected lands, with Caw Caw Interpretive Center across the road and Dungannon Heritage Preserve to the east. We believe we need to conserve sensitive coastal resources and special places like these, not placing them on the front line to deal with septic tank pollution when something goes wrong. It’s also important to note that the Town of Ravenel is beginning the important steps to update its Comprehensive Plan, which helps guide the growth and development of the Town. The Ravenel Town Council has a valuable opportunity here to reject these plans and press pause while they hear from residents about the vision they want to see for the future of Ravenel. Submit written comments below to the Ravenel Town Council telling them you do not support irresponsible development, especially not at the cost of our natural resources. |
These plans are not unique. Across the Lowcountry, we are seeing developers bypass necessary infrastructure and densely place septic systems in rural areas with far-reaching implications. We must grow smarter, and stand firm against irresponsible development that risks the health of our environment and adds unnecessary growth in areas unequipped to handle it. There is a valuable opportunity here for the Ravenel Town Council to uphold the character of the area and protect its pristine natural resources that surround the town. Make sure your voice is heard in telling the Ravenel Town Council to vote NO! |
